Don Carlo del Borgo Antico
The Gerace Farm is a small oasis in the hill country around Enna, at 650 m above sea level in the heart of Sicily. The Fontanazza family arrived in Gerace in 1893 when Giovanni leased the entire fiefdom totaling 940 hectares from the Duke of Misterbianco. In the immediate aftermath of the war, following the agrarian reform, his son Carmelo and his grandsons acquired about 220 hectares, including the old mansion which dates back to the 1500s. The dedication and abilities of the Fontanazzas have transformed the old estate that produced wheat into a modern farm business which cultivates almonds, olives and grapes and raises cattle and sheep. During the 80s, Giovanni’s great-granddaughter Antonella, inherited from her father Carlo a small part of the old fiefdom, which she has since developed. Through the years, all the organic cultivation facilities have been renovated and in 2000 an agritourism business was launched. The organic extra virgin olive oil produced originates from this land. The olives cultivated here are harvested exclusively by hand, stored in the shade in aerated crates and milled within 48 hours. The oil is stored in stainless steel silos, in a dry locale at fixed temperatures, protected from heat and light sources. "Borgo Antico" oil is produced exclusively with mechanical procedures and does not undergo filtering.
